Lois R. Coffin

Garnet Ruth Lois Coffin, 100, of Humansville, Missouri, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at Northwood Hills Care Center, on July 12, 2026, at 5:55 A.M. Lois was born on January 23, 1926, in Stratton, Colorado, in Yuma County, to Anna Marie (Liebsack) and Henry Herman John Poppe. When she was 6, her family moved to Norton County, Kansas, where they lived for eight years on a farm located between Lenora and Norton given to them by Anna Marie’s parents. During the Dust Bowl years, Lois and her siblings attended Ordell, a one-room schoolhouse. At 14, Lois moved with her family to Humansville, Missouri, where she attended Humansville High School until she married Haskell Curtis Coffin in 1942. After their marriage, Haskell joined the Army and served for nine months before receiving an honorable discharge due to rheumatic fever. Two years later, Haskell and Lois moved to Remond, Oregon, where they spent a year working for Lois’s brother, Vernon. Their son, Dean, was 1 ½ years old when their second child, Dixie, was born in Bend, Oregon. The family moved back to Missouri where they lived for the remainder of their lives. The family grew as four more daughters and another son were born. Lois was preceded in death by her husband in 2009; her parents; a sister, Alma at age 12; all sever of her brothers and sisters and their spouses; her 2-year-old son, John; her son Dean; her granddaughter, Angela; her grandsons Dennis and Mark, and a great-grandson Clinton. One of the most memorable and enduring things that the daughters remember is having the word of God read to them each morning at the breakfast table by their mother. A woman of deep faith, enduring traditions, and unwavering love for her family, Lois lived a life devoted to serving others and sharing her many talents. She was a faithful follower of our Lord and Savior and was saved at home during the time that Haskell was in the Army. Lois continued attending weekly church services for as long as her health allowed. She faithfully wrote her weekly newspaper column, The Hickory Grove Chatter, for many decades, preserving the stories, history, and happenings of her community. Lois found great joy in creating lasting memories with those she loved. She will be remembered for the treasured family recipes she passed down through generations, especially her ancestral cheese dumplings, a beloved New Year’s tradition, and her famous Egg Pancakes, which were published in a regional cookbook. She also had a creative spirit and loved scrapbooking, making handmade cards, and crocheting gifts that her family will cherish for years to come. Above all, Lois’ greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her daughters, Dixie (Don) Christensen, Patricia Bray, Joyce Stacy, Terri (Richard) Watts, and Twyla (Jack) Vencill; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 35 (and counting) great-great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and dear friends. Lois leaves behind a legacy of faith, kindness, resilience, and family traditions that will continue to live on through the generations she loved so dearly. Her warmth, wisdom, and generous heart will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were blessed to know her. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Northwood Hills Care Center and Compassus Hospice for the compassionate care, comfort, and kindness shown to Lois during her final days. “Lord willing and the creek don’t rise” -Lois Coffin Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home in Humansville. A visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the service, beginning at 1:30 PM.
