Elma Jean Carter

Elma Jean (McColm) Carter daughter of William Howard McColm and Millie Jane (Bass) McColm, born September 17, 1931 in the home at Halfway Missouri and departed this life on January 2, 2011. Jean was saved during a meeting at Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 12. She joined Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church and baptized in November of 1943 where she remained a member til her death. On April 21, 1956 she married Vernon A Carter, to this union three children were born, Michael Kim Carter, Addie Jane (Carter) Francka and Vernon Mark Carter. She was preceded in death by her parents Howard and Millie McColm, 2 Sisters-Willa M Ryan, Ruth H Bonner, 1 Brother-Wm Ralph McColm, 1 Grandson-Matthew Carter, 3 Brothers-in-law-Edwin Zulauf, George Bonner and Chester Ryan, 1 Sister-in-law-Ruby J McColm, 1 Niece-Jeanine Zulauf. Survivors include her husband of 54 years Vernon of the home, 3 Children-Mike Carter and wife Rhonda of Halfway, Jane Francka and husband Raymond of Bolivar and Mark Carter. 11 Grandchildren-JudiAnn Sutt and husband Troy, Larry C Covert and wife Chris, Kimberly A Foster and husband Jason, Amy J Hodges and husband Ben, Mark Carter Jr, Michael L Carter and wife Cody, Emily Francka, Veronica Carter, Kayla Carter, Kyle Carter and Levi Carter. 1 Nephew-George Bonner, 5 Nieces-Mardel Skinner, Linda Trollinger, Mary White, Loretta Gallagher and Debbie May. 12 Great Grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends. She started out as house wife and mother, working on the farm, milking cows by hand and raising calves. After the kids were all in school started working outside the home. In 1971 she earned her CNA and worked at Greenview Nursing Home, caring for elderly and mentally challenged adults. Then in 1972 she began working at Teters Manufacturing in Bolivar working her way up the ladder, retiring in 1995 as base room supervisor. Times of enjoyment were her weekly meeting at TOPS and exercising at the Y with the Silver Sneakers. Hobby and love of her life was her family. Kids, grandkids, great grandkids, nieces, nephews to all was extended a wealth of love and knowledge. She fixed lunch every Sunday and if you wanted to offend her, just ask her if she would like to take a Sunday off. A true friend who gave freely of herself, she always seemed to know what you needed without every saying a word. She successfully left her mark and will be sorely missed by all. Visitation will be at Murray Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p. m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011. Funeral service will be at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 10:30 a. m. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
