Mabel L. Vest

Mabel L. Vest, 95, of Polk died at 6:30am, Sunday, June 24, 2007 at Parkview Healthcare Facility in Bolivar. Mabel was born on September 2, 1911, at her parent's home near Huron. She was the daughter of William Homer Brown and Mary Elnora Henson Brown. Mabel was saved, baptized, and at the age of 16 became a member of the Fairview Methodist Church, where she remained a faithful member. She was united in marriage to Johnny A. Vest on March 31, 1932, and to this union was born a son, Wayne, and a daughter, Marilyn. Mabel was a sweet, gentle lady with high morals and a loving spirit. From working outside, raising chickens, gardening, and gathering from various fruits trees, her outside joys were many, including fishing. Mabel was equally proficient inside being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to the many that loved her so very much. In the kitchen, she loved canning, making meals for friends, family, and numerous farm workers Johnny would hire to help on the farm. Everything from homemade bread, noodles, peanut brittle, pies, and of course her famous cookies. They were all her specialties that will be truly missed. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Johnny; four brothers, Jesse, Bob, Noel, and Tom Brown; three sisters, Della Pitts, Stella Lightfoot, and Velma Fowler. She is survived by a son, Wayne Vest and his wife, Pam, of Polk; a daughter, Marilyn Davis and her husband, Jim, of Polk; seven grandchildren and their husbands, Lorie and Marc Periman, Susan and Les Payne, Machele and Brett Hosley, Belinda and Scott Martinsen, Malissa and Mark Julien, Kim and Les Jarman, and Brian Vest; two step granddaughters, Shelly Chaney, and Linda and Mike Perkins; ten great grandchildren, Mariah Periman, Derek and Ashley Payne, Alyx and Blake Hosley, Amanda and Brandon Martinsen, Sydney and Carsyn Julien, and Riley Jarman; five step great grandchildren, Brooke and Brina Randles, Brock and Brianna Chaney, and Gary Lane Jackson. Also surviving are one brother and his wife, Marvin and Dorothy Brown; one sister and her husband, Mary Marie and Wayne Hammerbacher; one sister-in-law, Rose Brown; and several nieces, nephews, and many, many friends. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00pm Friday, June 29, 2007 in the Butler Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be at 10:00am, Saturday, June 30, 2007 in the Butler Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Hendrickson and the Rev. James Friend officiating. A Eulogy will be given by Scott Martinsen. The Fairview United Methodist Church Choir and the Hammerbacher family will provide music with Darlene Geyer as the pianist. The songs will be "His Way With Thee", "Victory In Jesus" and "Amazing Grace". Burial will be in the Payne Cemetery at Polk. Casketbearers will be Brian Vest, Marc Periman, Les Payne, Brett Hosley, Scott Martinsen, Mark Julien, Les Jarman, and Derek Payne.
