Jean Chappell

Mattie Ella Jean Crafton Chappell died June 30, 2010 at the age of 84 years. She passed away peacefully at Parkview Healthcare Facility in Bolivar. Jean was born April 11, 1926 in Sidney, Arkansas to Henry Clayton and Rosa Estella (Millner) Crafton. Mom was the youngest of 7 children. She grew up during the depression and spoke of the very hard times and conditions they endured in those days. She worked hard and grew up in a loving family and told stories of that time to us. Jean was saved at a revival meeting at Sidney, Arkanas when was 15 years old. She married Maurice Chappell in May, 1943 during the World War II years. To this union 6 children were born. She was a homemaker and worked at various schools as a cook. She could come up with an idea for any kind of a craft, make it work and make you love it! She loved sports and getting to watch her kids and grandkids participate in them. She taught many of us how to bait a hook and know just when to wait, wait and then snag that one that didn t get away from her. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, 3 older brothers, Chester Crafton, Johnny Crafton and Leamon Crafton; 2 sisters, Aunt Bill McKee and Grace Hargis; her husband, Maurice Chappell; and great-grandson, Travis L. Mayfield. Jean is survived by her sister, Fay Cates, Bolivar; her children, Dennis and Carol Chappell, Bolivar, Daryl and Jamie Chappell, Spring Point, MI, Stephen and Donna Chappell, Collins, Vickie and Richard Smith, Long Lane, Marcia and Doyle Mayfield, Halfway, and Martin and Stacy Chappell, Urbana; 24 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many, many friends everywhere. Jean was our mom. We all loved her tremendously. We do and will miss her. We all loved her the same but differently. She showed us all so much and taught us all so well. If only everyone could be so lucky. Love you, Mom. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, July 5, 2010 at Murray Funeral Home, Bolivar, with Brother Doyle Mayfield officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Sunday. PDF Printable Version
