Deanna Joy Garrett

Deanna Garrett, 76, of Bolivar passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Citizen's Memorial Hospital in Bolivar. Deanna was born in San Bernardino, California to Henry and Sylvia Dedmon. In 1947 she moved with her parents to Bolivar and lived here for the remainder of her life. She attended grade school at Ryan School and graduated from the Bolivar High School. Attending Bolivar Assembly of God Deanna accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at a young age and became a member. Eventually she met and married Benton Garrett on April 19, 1957 at that very same church. To this union two daughters were born, Evelyn and LaRita. Deanna and Benton were also blessed with four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Grandma's house was where you went if you were hungry. If she didn't have what you wanted already prepared, she would fix it in a hurry because cooking and baking goodies for those she loved was her favorite thing to do. Deanna worked at the garment factory for 26 years before she and Benton purchased the Nifty Caf in Bolivar. After fixing it up, they changed the name to D's Nifty Caf and for the next 20 years she fed a multitude of people. She quietly and generously also fed many older folks and sent food home with people in need. Nineteen of the 20 years she fed the inmates at the county jail. She continued to cook large meals for her family at home until her failing health made her stop. While she was still able and being a farm girl at heart, she loved being on the farm caring for cows, chickens, and tending her large garden. She shared her produce with anyone who wasn't able to raise their own. Deanna was preceded in death by her parents and daughter LaRita. She is survived by her husband Benton of 57 years; daughter Evelyn Stottlemyer of Walnut Grove; grandchildren Billy Marshall and his wife Erica of Bolivar, April Drew and her husband Shane of Liberty, Gary Justin Marshall and his wife Candy of Pittsburg, Danny Brewer of Walnut Grove; and her 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Deanna Garrett will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Murray Funeral Home in Bolivar officiated by Rev. Gary Ankrom followed by burial in Bolivar's Greenwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Friday evening, August 1st at the funeral home.
